The flashcard system is a tried and tested way of learning a lot of key words and phrases in a simple, fast and effective way. Declan Software take the concept into the 21st century by including native speaker audio, sound wave images and multiple ways in which you can test yourself using computer based applications. A focus on pronunciation is an excellent aspect of Declan Software, as it is infinitely more useful to learn vocabulary along with its correct pronunciation; especially in the context of conversational Italian. We especially liked the typing exercise as it ensures that the written aspect of Italian is covered; a trick missed by many other flashcard based programs in this category. This said, many of the other flashcard based programs in this category do boast some flashy features that Declan Software lacks. However, Declan Software is far cheaper than  these products yet still manages to be effective in what it promises to deliver.

Learning vocabulary is a great way to begin learning Italian. In terms of language acquisition, It is proven that students with a solid vocab base fair far better than those without . Also, knowledge of vocabulary is the most useful aspect of a language in terms of basic understanding; grammar is not necessary for asking simple questions, listening to basic instructions or reading an Italian menu. However, it cannot be denied that to progress up to an advanced level, an understanding of grammatical concepts and structures is required. In this way, the scope of Declan Software is slightly limited, but this doesn't mean it can't provide an excellent base from which learners can progress onto more advanced Italian or a fantastic addition to other, more comprehensive, programs. Whether you are looking for a supplement to your Italian classes or want to get the basics of Italian in order to make the most of a holiday there, Declan software will provide you with a cheap, simple solution.

You can try out a limited version of Declan Software for free and, if you are sufficiently impressed, you can download it for just $29.75. Once downloaded, you have unlimited access to a substantial library of word file downloads sorted by category. The software also includes applications with which you can test yourself which, although limited technology wise, are a welcome tool to take what you have learned from your flashcards that little bit further. Although there exist portable apps for Declan Software French, there is currently no version available for Italian which is disappointing as it means you are tied to your computer for something that you could potentially be doing on the move. This said, if these apps prove popular they could well become available for Italian which would make an excellent addition to Declan Software. In sum, this is a cheap yet effective, no nonsense product which will make an excellent starting point or addition to a comprehensive Italian learning experience.
