Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way is certainly fast, and as fun as any textbook based Italian course can be. You will be introduced to the absolute basics of Italian such as numbers and days of the week as well as the language you'll need for everyday situations such as introductions, finding your way, entertainment, dining, shopping, banking, using the telephone and mail services and of course medical help and emergencies. The learning experience is kept interesting with cartoon style illustrations and the use of casual, light hearted language while the games and puzzles make it varied and fun. The quizzes, with corresponding answers in the back, are a great way of testing yourself and the flash cards allow for a little language learning on the go. Also, Learn Italian the Fast and Fun way comes with a useful bilingual dictionary which is small enough to carry around in your pocket for quick reference while you are out sightseeing in Venice or Rome.

This book really does focus on just the basics and nothing more; it does not even touch on the past tense. Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way simply teaches you the key phrases that you will need to get around on a vacation or business trip for which an understanding of sentence structure and grammatical rules is unnecessary. In this way, you will start learning useful Italian words and phrases from the word go. The lack of heavy grammar and the fun and casual approach that this book takes make your first steps into the Italian language easy and relaxed.

Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way cannot be compared to many other products in this category as it is almost completely different. There would be little point in listing all the features that this textbook lacks in comparison to the comprehensive multimedia Italian language courses out there because its rock bottom price tag sets it distinctly apart. We did find, however, that the lack of any audio on CD or otherwise was sorely missed. Although words are spelt out for you phonetically, it is still incredibly difficult to pronounce them correctly and you may find you have learnt whole sets of vocabulary incorrectly, rendering them almost useless in a conversational context. If you are an experienced language learner this may not be a problem for you, however, as a beginner you may find it necessary to combine Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way with other sources of learning. Used in this way, it will make an excellent reference guide for the basics.

In sum, at a bargain price (we saw some used copies going for just $2.88!) Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way will give you a lighthearted introduction to the Italian language as well as make an excellent companion to beginner lessons. As long as you match your expectations to the price you will be far from disappointed.
