Learning Italian Like Crazy is basically an Italian Audio course consisting of 30 half hour lessons that users can download and either play on their computer, burn onto CD or transfer onto their Mp3 player. This makes Learning Italian Like Crazy a very portable option because, due to the fact that there is no need for note taking, you can access the course while you are cooking, in the car or at the gym, converting that 'dead time' into productive Italian learning. The course also comes with video lessons which add another dimension to your learning and free software from the Foreign Service Institute which provides you with yet more audio lessons as well as a textbook which is useful for grammatical explanations.

Learning Italian Like Crazy, unlike other products in this category, claims to get you thinking in Italian but not through an immersion approach. They claim that we do not learn languages like a child because not only are our brains different, but neither are we fully immersed in the way a child is. Instead, Learning Italian Like Crazy places you in real life situations in which you have to employ your newly learned Italian. The variety of situations keeps the learning process interesting and some of them are even quite fun; a party in Rome for example! As the focus is on communication, a special effort is made to perfect users' pronunciation and we especially liked the range of Italian accents employed in the audio lessons. We found that, as with all audio courses, what you get out of it will depend on what you put in. You cannot expect to just passively listen and learn but rather, you must fully engage with the course. If you pause and rewind when you don't quite catch something, then take notes if possible and try to treat the classes as real one-on-one classes you will get far more out of this course.

We found Learning Italian Like Crazy to be a great Audio Only course, although not much more. It claims to get you speaking like an Italian with a great accent. However, this is difficult to achieve when there is no speech recognition or analysis technology. Also, although the lessons are varied and interesting, the lack of other types of activities may lead you to getting slightly bored with audio lesson after audio lesson. Furthermore, the lack of progress tracking and self assessment software can leave you slightly lost, unsure if you are actually making progress at all. Although, there is a fantastic amount of free software thrown in with Learning Italian Like Crazy, we couldn't help feeling that these were just substandard extras bundled with Learning Italian Like Crazy in order to sweeten the deal.

If Learning Italian Like Crazy was marketed as simply an audio course we would be slightly more enthusiastic about it because the audio lessons in themselves are quite interesting. However, at nearly $100 dollars there are some far better audio only courses in this category for half the price. True, they do not offer the amount of freebies that come with Learn Italian Like Crazy but, to be honest, we weren't especially taken by these and would have preferred a no nonsense, more focused teach yourself Italian course. If you are simply looking for lots of course material then by all means go for Learning Italian Like Crazy. However, if you are more concerned with quality over quantity then we would advise you to look elsewhere. This said, the free trail offered by Learning Italian Like crazy gives you an excellent taster of the course and, as everyone's learning preferences are different, you may find this product to be just right for you.
