Editor's Review:

Despite a clearly impressive amount of features, and the great savings you can make when buying box sets, there is no denying that  $529 for the complete Tell Me More Italian set makes it one of the most expensive language learning solutions in this category. Certainly, in terms of quantity of features, you'll be getting your money's worth. However, if these are of poor quality then they are not worth much. In this way, it is vital that the features of Tell Me More Italian are top notch if it is to be a good deal.

Upon commencing Tell Me More Italian, you are invited to indicate your preferences and how you want you learn as well as taking a level test. You then have the option to select the interface language  as well as customize other settings. It is immediately clear that Tell Me More Italian is very flexible, enabling users to easily get a grip on the substantial amount of content on offer. What is more, it is much more rare than you may think for a program to offer user interface in a variety of languages; a common source of customer dissatisfaction in this category.

Once you are set up, it is easy to get stuck in to your Italian Learning. We found the speech recognition technology top notch; each activity focuses on one syllable, users listen to the  pronunciation given by a native speaker and then repeat. You can then use the speech analysis technology to visually compare your pronunciation of the given word to that of the native speaker and the program gives you a score according to your accuracy. We similarly enjoyed the conversation and role play activities which are interactive and enjoyable; following prompts, users are guided through scenarios which differ every time, resulting in great grammar and vocab exercises in real life situations. These activities demonstrate the immersion approach employed by Tell Me More Italian,  giving you a deeper, comprehensive language learning experience. However, differing from other 'immersion approach' competitors, Tell Me More Italian gives users instant access to a dictionary, one click translations, a conjugator and grammatical explanations. These features can alleviate frustration often associated with total immersion language learning software.

On the downside, some of the interactive activities become a bit disjointed with a few bugs towards the more advanced levels. Furthermore, throughout the program some of the 'games' were quite tedious; we really didn't get anything out of the word-searches and crosswords. Despite this, users can always choose to avoid such activities which is especially easy with Tell Me More's flexible, customizable interface. On the other hand, at more that $500 some may expect all the activities to be excellent. However, considering the sheer volume of exercises, it would have been surprising if we hadn't found any we didn't like. It is important to remember that different users have different preferences and learn in different ways; no one activity will suit everyone. Although we found Tell Me More's activities quite hit or miss, we would certainly encourage you to check them out for yourself, especially as Tell Me More offer an excellent free trial.

What made Tell Me More Italian stand out and earn its top ten spot were the tracking tools on offer. You can check your weekly activity to make sure you are not slacking and the progress tracker gives you real motivation to either keep up the good work, or put more effort in if need be. We especially liked the personal touch delivered through personalized online tests, activities and a 24/7 online adviser that will be there to support you even after you have completed Tell Me More Italian.

As a global leader in language learning software, Tell Me More has received more awards than any other program and claims 7 million satisfied customers. This is all backed up by a flashy website, the smooth and stylish interface of their software and the sheer amount of features on offer. Although the quality of these features is slightly hit or miss, this is unsurprising when more than 20000 are on offer. On average the quality is still far above that of most other products in this category and Tell Me More Italian's progress tracker and speech recognition technology really set it apart from the competition. Furthermore, Tell Me More Italian is one of the most flexible programs in this category, likely to suit almost all users; if price is not an issue, or you are serious about learning Italian, we would certainly recommend this product to you.

Please note:
TellMeMore.com (Auralog, Inc.) have been taken over by their rival, Rosetta Stone. Although the original TellMeMore software is still available to buy/download from Amazon, the TellMeMore website now re-directs to Rosetta Stone's website.
