Editor's Verdict:

The Complete Idiot's Guide is a series which explains a wide range of subjects to complete beginners in an approachable and concise way. This exactly what you'll get with The Complete Idiot's Guide to Italian. The book takes you from a complete beginners level through different aspects and themes of the Italian language. Users are progressively introduced to increasingly complex grammar and vocabulary through a structured approach which gets you using everything you have learnt and slowly building upon it. While the grammar can at times be quite heavy, the author Gabrielle Euvino injects her enthusiasm and passion for the Italian language into the text while the tone of the book is both relaxed and lighthearted. We especially liked the  little cultural notes sprinkled throughout the book which provided interesting titbits of cultural knowledge which keep the reader engaged and whet the appetite for that potential trip to Italy. The quick reference guides to verbs, grammar and sentence structure are very useful and the well stocked appendixes and glossary provide an accessible source of a range of handy Italian words and phrases.

The material presented in The Complete Idiot's Guide to Italian is very down to earth yet progressively moves the user onto increasingly complex grammar. This said, this is an idiot's (complete beginner) guide and will only take you up to an intermediate level. As opposed to other complete beginner's programs however, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Italian provides users with detailed sentence structure and grammatical explanations. Some may find this unnecessary when only speaking basic Italian while others may be more comfortable expressing simple concepts in Italian with a basic yet solid understanding of the grammar. Some of The Complete Idiot's guide's competitors sideline grammar in favor of useful words and set phrases so the best approach for you will be a personal choice depending on your learning preferences. However, if you are pretty sure you will want to take your Italian further, then we would recommend The complete Idiot's Guide to Italian as, for a little more effort, it will provide you with a more comprehensive understanding of beginner's Italian. In this way, it will also make an excellent reference guide for beginner and intermediate Italian learners who are taking classes or using other teach yourself Italian products.

Overall, this beginner's guide focuses more on grammar and sentence structure which may put off complete beginners or those who do not enjoy this part of a language. For those of us with some language learning experience or who have access to additional sources of Italian learning this book will be a great beginner's course or reference guide.
