Described as 'a grammar based course', Living Italian may appear, upon first glances, potentially quite dull. However, don't let this put you off; grammar is explained in a simple and concise way using examples to illustrate complex concepts. Living Italian basically consists of a textbook with a CD to accompany it. Unlike many other products in this category, it is based on a traditional approach to language learning as opposed to flashy technology, complex algorithms and 'immersion' techniques. Users build their Italian upon solid grammatical foundations, developing confidence in conversation, translation skills and a well rounded vocabulary based on a variety of everyday topics.

Rather than simply learning dry grammatical rules, you will learn Italian that you can begin using straight away. The grammatical explanations are clear and concise and the vocab is all relevant. At a manageable pace, each unit builds upon the last in a well structured way that ensures users feel that tangible progress is being made. The units begin with grammatical explanations and vocab lists which are then applied to some reading material. Questions and exercises then ensure that new material is understood and internalized. We especially liked the occasional revision units which were fantastic for consolidating what we had learned.

Despite being a 'traditional' approach, we actually found it refreshing to find something on the market that offered no thrills yet concise and comprehensive textbook based learning. Too many products these days offer quick fix, effort free solutions which are not only expensive but may also teach you a rather superficial Italian. Learning a new language can be hard, but it can also be very rewarding when you fully understand the grammatical structure upon which it is based. Living Italian will require effort but it is worth it considering the strong understanding the user will gain from this textbook.

In this way, for those looking for a one off product to give you the basics before a holiday to Italy, this may not be the product for you as you will be wasting time and effort on grammar that you will rarely use. On the other hand, if you are in it for the long term, this book will furnish you with excellent foundations upon which you will, with commitment, be able to progress towards fluency. It must be said that Living Italian will be far better suited to experienced language learners as they will find the grammar a lot easier to grasp and will experience less difficulties with the pronunciation. The accompanying CD and pronunciation section give you a taste for spoken Italian but will not be enough on their own. In fact, for all users, use of Living Italian as a companion to other sources of Italian learning will greatly improve your experience. Finally, children and those of us who remember grammar classes in school with a shudder may well be put off by an unavoidable dryness that a grammar based approach invariably carries. Overall, this will make a great companion product for all users and can even be used 'stand alone' by advanced language learners. From a beginner to an advanced level you will find it useful for learning, revision and reference and for the low price you will not be disappointed.
